When you reel in the line or when the fish takes the bait both of these cause the reaction of the weight being lifted out of harms way. In rocky areas this rig will seriously help prevent snags. This setup also gives the fish less resistance when they take the bait also giving a better chance of catching it. The advantage of the pulley rig when used on snaggy bottoms is that once a fish has been hooked the weight of the fish pulls the line through the top swivel and thus lifts the sinker away from the bottom.

The pulley rig is great for larger fish which live close to the bottom such as snapper gurnard Kahawhai. This being for the reason that when the fish takes the bait and pulls away from the rig, the hook length is pulled through the pulley system until the lead is jammed up against the top swivel thus lifting the lead from any rough ground on the bottom and out of a situation where it may become snagged whilst you concentrate on landing the fish.…… pretty sneaky, huh?
